The Long-Term Value of a Short-Term Helping Hand

The grants that Modest Needs makes are designed to short-circuit the cycle of poverty by preventing families from losing their jobs, their homes, and their self-sufficiency.

We do this by remitting payment for a small, emergency expense that a struggling family could not afford without 'borrowing' from the money they've set aside for their regular bills - their rent, utility and food money, for example. To date, the average grant made by Modest Needs has been $183.83, but its value far exceeds the cost of the gift itself.

When a Modest Needs Grant Keeps a Family Working For One Month For 6 Months For 12 Months
Income from Work that Remains Available to Family $1,481.43 $8,888.58 $17,777.16
Less an Unemployed Family's State Benefits ($722.03) ($4,332.18) ($8,664.36)
Subtotal: Net Employment Income Retained by Family $759.40 $4,556.40 $9,112.80
Plus Cost of the One-Time Gift Itself $183.83 $183.83 $183.83
Total: The TOTAL Value of a Modest Needs Grant to the Family that Receives It $943.23 $4,740.23 $9,296.63
